African swine fever (ASF) is a severe viral disease that affects both domestic and wild pigs and is responsible for major production and economic losses. As a transboundary animal disease (TAD) it can be spread by live or dead pigs and via pork products. Transmission can take place via contaminated feed and fomites including shoes, clothes, vehicles, knives and equipment. Unlike classical swine fever ASF does not have an approved vaccine (OIE, 2020). The disease is caused by the African swine fever virus (ASFV) which is a large complex DNA virus and the only member of the Asfarviridae family in genus Asfivirus and almost 100 per cent of infected domestic pigs die from the disease (Galindo & Alonso, 2017).
